"Maxine" is a painting about the strong black women who guided me as a child, taught me how to read and gave me the love of books, who guided my hands in the garden and the kitchen, who showed me how to be fair with others and respect myself as well. "Maxine" is about Big Mamma, and Jesse, and Barbara, and Betty and Rosa, Aunt Meads and other women who helped shape me into the person I am today.

For this reason, I would like to dedicate this painting to the memory of Rosa Parks. Her courage shaped a generation, and brought light and courage into the hearts of many Americans.
