Happy 7th Birthday to BC
A Message from the Publisher

BC appeared the first time in the year 2002 on April 5th. It was not planned that we would publish the first issue during the week marking the death of brother Martin.  It just turned out that way.

That first issue focused on the fruit of the poisoned tree which came in the form of the hard right's plan to capture Newark NJ.  We described Cory Booker, the Black mayoral candidate from the city's Central Ward, a “cynical pretender who attempts to position himself as the common people's defender while locked in the deep embrace of institutes and foundations that bankroll virtually every assault on social and economic justice in America.”

From the very birth of this publication the issue of accountability in the African American body politic was a primary core value.  Presenting commentary, analysis and investigations on issues affecting African Americans and the African World we have worked towards being a part of the movement for social justice, economic justice and peace.

We had no idea that the corporate powers would grow totally out of control over the next seven years.  The reality we have lived far outstripped our wildest nightmares.

So here we are moving into our eighth year faced with the biggest challenge ever.  Trying to keep Barack Obama’s feet to the fire may in many respects be a far more daunting task than beating our head against the fascist brick wall of the Bush/Cheney corporate pig sty.

We traveled the road here the first couple of years by using up our personal savings, credit and investments. In the last couple of years contributions by our dear readers have kept us afloat. However, we hit tough times just as the rug was being pulled out from under all of us by the laughing hyenas who happily control the money.

During the last week I was listening to a song by Leonard Cohen titled “Everybody Knows”.  The depressing lyrics of the first stanza go like this:

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Yeah, we know the odds are against us and we are frightened and encouraged by the rage we feel swelling across our planet.

We are not going to give up.  We are in the struggle for the duration.
